The Problem

It is a human right to be able to swim, surf, paddle and bathe in safety without getting sick. The health of our oceans and rivers has never been worse; polluted waters are a major threat to our health, the wildlife around us, and the long-term future of our ecosystems. Water companies are profiteering off pollution and the government is complicit.

Only 13% of the bathing season is tested

Viruses are more common in bathing waters, but no one is testing for them
UK water users are just as likely to fall ill from seawater as in the 1990's

The Solution

Aquarius™: A simple and intuitive water quality tester to reduce the impact of sewage contamination on regular water users. It addresses this impact by testing for Norovirus and E. Coli in real-time, uploading the results to an app database that makes it accessible to anyone.

Simple & Portable

Easy to use and intended for any watersport enthusiast, it communicates test results through a single coloured LED, making it easy to read in the water whilst more detailed results are uploaded to the Aquarius™ app. Aquarius™ can be worn as a wearable in the water or attached to your equipment, so there is no worry about leaving items on the beach.

Microfluidics Technology

Aquarius™ tests for Norovirus and E. Coli, two key indicators for sewage contamination, using two reusable microfluidic cartridges that contain antigens. Any positive reaction between sample and cartridge is detected by multiple LEDs to determine the level of pathogens present. This is then translated into one of four UK government classifications.

  • Excellent: No pathogen detected (≤250cfu/100ml - 95th percentile)
  • Good: Minimal level (≤500cfu/100ml - 95th percentile)
  • Sufficient: Medium level (≤500cfu/100ml - 90th percentile)
  • Poor: High level (>500cfu/100ml)

Aquarius™ can test a sample and provide results within minutes, meaning you no longer need to wonder if the water is safe, you can confidently swim, surf or paddle without worry.

Usability

Aquarius™ is wirelessly charged through a hub that runs off mains power. This hub can be placed anywhere in the home on a flat surface or wall, to allow you to charge the device with ease in between uses.

In the lower section of the hub is a cleaning zone, where the testing cartridges can be inserted for cleaning and disinfecting between uses using ultraviolet light.

After about 16 uses of each cartridge, the reactant fluid that allows Aquarius™ to test bathing water samples will need replenishing. This is easy to do using the eye dropper bottle that our reactant fluid is purchased in.
